[FIRST NAME GOES HERE], Have You Tried Red Red?

Habari Gani Reader?!

Habari Gani means 'What's the News Today' or 'How are you' in Swahili and it's a common greeting used in Kwanzaa celebration.

Real quick, Reader, have you ever tried Red Red before?

Red Red is a Ghanian black-eyed pea stew known for it's big flavor and comforting taste. I'm making it tonight as a spin on my long-time Southern tradition of cooking black-eyed peas and greens for the bringing luck and money into the new year. The origins of Red Red are not specifically known, however, it is suggested the recipe was first developed by the Akan people in Ghana/Ivory Coast.

The Southern-American tradition of cooking savory, delicious pots of black-eyed peas and leafy greens on NYE has been in my family for generations. The origin of this new year's tradition has a few different theories, and one in particular is said to trace back to when Sephardic Jews migrated to the American South and they brought black-eyed peas with them, which they ate at Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) for good luck. Black-eyed peas originated from North Africa and have been a nutritious staple in many African-indigenous cuisines for centuries.

Side notes for cooking this recipe:

I used canned black-eyed peas, canned organic diced tomatoes (2 cups), and a smoked turkey leg for extra smoky flavor. Remember to play up recipes to fit what YOU like! Enjoy!
