December 29, 2025: Ujamaa + Post-Holiday Wellness Support

Habari Gani Reader?!

I hope you're having a good month!

Today is the fourth day of Kwanzaa, which is Ujamaa.

Ujamaa means Cooperative Economics, and it's about building and maintaining our own commerce through stores and businesses for collective growth and community reinvestment.

My medical practice and business wouldn't exist without many folks practicing Ujamaa, regardless of whether or not you celebrate Kwanzaa or identify as African-American. Community care cannot progress without community support and investment, so thank you for your support!

And yes, I'm still on holiday break, but I wanted to share with you a quick story about when I first learned what Ujamaa really meant.

When I was a sophomore in college at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA, my friends and I identified a gap in student life. With a campus diversity index of 20%+ BIPOC students, there was only one organization centering Black students at the time, the Black Student Caucus (BSC). Unfortunately, that student org was inactive due to previous outstanding debts. Why? I don't know! That occurred before our matriculation.

The only way to get the BSC org up and running again was to pay off the account and find a new faculty sponsor, but we didn't have money or sponsorship to bail out this abandoned org.

Then it dawned on us, why are we relegated to only this org? Why aren't there more options to support our campus diversity?

So, we did our due diligence and decided to create a new student organization, and we chose the name Ujamaa. To become a new club, we had to present our case in front of the student government and board as to why this new cultural organization should exist when there was already a BSC. Thankfully, one of my best friends and co-founders was pre-law, and she laid out our case beautifully and succinctly. The core of our mission was to ensure we had safe and inclusive spaces for BIPOC students to prosper and feel well-supported at a PWI, and that multiple options should be available to us because melanated people are not a monolith.

Here is a clipping I found from the Yamacraw (college yearbook) with Ujamaa's mission statement:

We were blessed to have prominent Atlanta leaders and professionals of the African Diaspora as guest speakers and co-hosts for our campus events. When you see people who look like you excelling, then you can believe and see yourself excelling too. When you meet successful business owners with similar backgrounds to yours, it gives you hope to know you can have ownership one day, too. Being a co-founder of the Ujamaa organization in college laid the foundation for me to be in service to you today. I'm forever grateful for that experience and opportunity.
